Is Cloud Computing An Over Hyped Technology?

"Over hyped" is in the eye of the beholder.

Cloud Computing (specifically SaaS) provides a great option for small businesses to be able to get access to software solutions that they would never otherwise be able to afford due to the prohibitive cost of entry - servers, support, staff, etc.

And getting the word out to a lot of small businesses takes time and a lot of avenues.

So, it may seem over-hyped to those of us who work with this stuff on a regular basis, but for small business owners who spend their days just "keeping the joint running", it's necessary to keep it in front of them - eventually they will look up and see they have options to make things easier/better/faster/cheaper.

But there is no question; it is being over hyped. The marketing people are making promises that cannot be delivered. I would suggest that in many cases, they are using the phrase incorrectly as well.

In many cases, the technology is being sold as a very generic solution to problems that actually require very specific answers, and Cloud Computing may not be appropriate at all.

Having said that, true Cloud Computing (public, private or hybrid) does offer some real benefits and could be used very effectively by a lot of businesses of different sizes. I would argue that it should be considered another weapon in the IT arsenal; not a replacement for the other technologies.

As far as it is actually a real technology - yes definitely over hyped.

But the more I think about it, the less I am convinced about 'cloud' being a real technology. It is more a conceptual change in the way delivery is done.

A private cloud can just as well be a normal off-site data center, just as they have been around for forever. Public clouds have already been around for ages as well (think of the way MSN has been around).

The thing is that the technologies we CAN offer both on- and off-premises have evolved in such a way that people are now starting to refer to it as 'cloud'.

This does not mean that we should not be excited about this evolution in service delivery. I personally have my doubts about the integration of hosted cloud-based services as opposed to the freedom and flexibility of a personally maintained system. This particularly if you would think of a multi-tenant unified communications environment...

I guess it's the usual answer in anything network-related: it all kind of depends...

Why Businesses Should NOT Choose Cable

Cable is basically a one way street, most of the bandwidth goes TO the customer, uploads are slow. That includes outbound email, web servers, VPN to home users, VoIP to home users or other business sites, backup files, DFS replications, and so on.

A more problematic thing with cable though, is it's a consumer business. From the way it bills to the way it's supported; its roots and operating procedures are for home users. They sell to business because most of the users are at work during the day and they have reserve capacity. They view business customers as pure gravy; they can use contracts and get additional markup for providing the same service.

They often bill by location, not by account (a home user billing system). Cable companies shut off service if they THINK the bill hasn't been paid, and then it is the customer's responsibility to figure out what happened (home user mentality). There isn't a LEC on the face of the earth that will shut off service on a billing error, there isn't a cable company on the face of the earth that doesn't. LEC's have a more experienced workforce, and more available solutions.

If a business calls their support team or the repair center for their LEC operator, a truck is rolling when they hang up the phone - cable is next business day at best. When you call the services center, you are talking to someone in Brazil - or worse - Houston, and their first job is to tell you to fix your stuff because theirs never breaks.

Remember too that cable is usually shared bandwidth. That means if you have a 1 Gbps connection, that is the most you can achieve. Other traffic on the network will cause your effective throughput to be lower. However, fiber is dedicated bandwidth, meaning you have that bandwidth available all of the time. One of the other keys with fiber is scalability. For those who manage a network, in an emergency you may need to quickly scale your bandwidth... a more difficult feat with cable obviously.

I use cable for home, it has a place because it's cheap - but I'd never recommend cable to any business as a primary service without backup.

Top 8 Reasons IT Projects Fail

The statistics covering IT projects that fail and the vast sums of money written off as a result, are quite terrifying.

Almost inevitably, there are a few relatively commonly-found reasons why organisations find themselves with a disaster on their hands.

1. Insufficient skill sets. The planning and execution of a successful IT project is a highly skilled business. All too often organisations make the mistake of allocating management responsibility for this to individuals who may be excellent generalist managers or with in-depth skills in other areas but who know little of what's involved in successfully delivering a major IT enterprise.

2. A disconnect between objectives and budget. Some organisations set their expectations too high in terms of what they hope to achieve for the sums of money they are willing to invest. In theory this should be flagged at the outset but in practice, it is often ignored in the hope that somehow the project team will be able to deliver anyway. Disappointment is inevitably the result.

3. A lack of key player support. Specialists in IT systems implementation will tell you that executive management commitment and focus is essential. If it is only one individual trying to force the project in against a backdrop of political in-fighting with his/her colleagues or corporate indifference then the project will fail.

4. Choosing the wrong solution. An initial feasibility study should always be conducted but sadly often isn't. This leads to a realisation, only after large sums have already been spent, that the solution being installed is unlikely to be fit for purpose. Short cutting the feasibility study or asking unqualified people to perform it is often the cause of trouble here.

5. A failure to control project spending. Budgetary control is one of the most demanding skills required of a good project manager but is often lacking. The result is typically a fundamental absence of financial control and the burning of allocated budget long before the project is concluded.

6. An increasing emphasis on unplanned 'quick-wins'. Many organisations become impatient for benefit out of the project and start to divert the project team onto so-called quick-win tangents. There is inevitably a dilution of project focus and if not tightly controlled it can be a cause of project failure. Experienced IT Systems Implementers will, if they are left to their own professional inclinations, not allow these deviations to take place.

7. A disconnect between project implementation dates and business backgrounds. This is a classic problem and arises when a large project is planned to run over say six months but by the time it concludes, the business world has moved on and the solution it is providing is no longer appropriate for the changed environment.

8. A failure to design an integrated solution. This can have many different flavours but typically arises when one area of an organisation purchases a solution which in order to work, needs to be fully integrated with the systems in another part of the same organisation. Sometimes it is only after purchase of the solution that this need for integration is discovered. In some situations, it is subsequently realised that the integration isn't possible due to technical incompatibilities and that can put any benefits out of the project at risk.

These are just a few of the more common reasons behind project failure and they are all scenarios best avoided.

Big Data...What It Is And What To Do With It

You may have heard the term big data before. It is usually measured by petabytes. To give you an idea how large this actually is, you can forget about megabytes or even terabytes. 1000 gigabytes equals a terabyte. A thousand of these and you've got a petabyte. This is an astronomical amount of data and it is because the infrastructure of the company has allowed it to get this large. Whether it's a website, a data processing center or something else, there is too much data.

It is almost impossible to collect all the data when it is so enlarged. Most companies can barely store it let alone utilize it effectively. As a result, there needs to be some sort of fix for it.

There are many companies that help with this big data. Whether it's storing it or leveraging it, you get access to the data again. This can mean getting your data on demand. You get a workflow that can actually be utilized because the data is condensed.

Resources are limited when there is so much data. It slows computers down and IT data centers become overcrowded because there is so much required storage. In addition, a lot of the time the data is simply not used. This is because the same data is on multiple computers, causing overlap and ineffective use of the current storage.

Instead of having a company help with the current data and improve the workflow, you can also turn to the clouds. Cloud computing is one of the newest forms of technology that is being utilized instead of a bunch of servers. Rather than sharing all of the data on a server, it is stored online in what is referred to as a cloud.

The benefits to this are a huge cost savings as well as physical storage requirements. When data is stored online, this eliminates huge data centers, a ton of electricity, and potentially entire IT departments. All of the big data is simply outsourced to a cloud.

Big data is just too massive to process on its own. Search engines encountered this years ago because of the datasets required for people to search on. Now, however, there is better technology including distributed analysis and better processing capabilities.

Large scale jobs can be distributed and coordinated using cloud architecture. The same data can be run on multiple machines without a physical machine in the building. The cloud is an online format so that as long as there is access to the internet, there is access to the data.

Rather than spending money on huge machines and processing solutions that changes the entire infrastructure of an organization, companies have recognized cloud computing as a very innovative solution for big data. It features the ability to pay as one goes on a monthly or annual basis instead of tying money up in capital assets. The regular cost simply gets written off as an expense of doing business.

Cloud technologies help in many assets of big data. These include the ability to search for millions of records, log analysis, generation of reports as well as index creation process. Data just gets larger and larger, eating up resources and it isn't something that's likely to just go away.

Big data is only going to continue getting bigger. Adding more servers isn't the answer - it's only going to increase a company's expenses. The 3 Little Words I Need To Hear From Technical Support

We live in a world that is so complicated that we've become dependent on others for technical support. What happens when technical support doesn't have the answers we require?

Let me begin by saying the 3 little words are NOT "I Love You"! Mind you if you answer my tech support call and resolve my issue efficiently with minimal drama I may just utter those words myself out of sheer surprise and extreme gratitude!

I think back to a simpler time when I was able to go about my day-to-day life without seeking technical support from others. Sure there was the odd call to customer service every now and then but phones were answered by humans, I didn't have to figure out which button to press for the service I required and I wasn't placed on hold for what seems like an eternity only to have the call dropped when it is finally picked up!

It appears we have created a world that is so complicated that we've become dependent on others for technical support on a daily basis!

As a software engineer I've always enjoyed problem solving and with Google at my fingertips I can frequently resolve many of the technical issues that come my way.

On the occasions where I do find myself calling technical support it's generally for 1 of the following reasons:

  • I'm unable to resolve the issue myself.
  • I don't have the time or resources to resolve the issue myself.
  • None of my tech-savvy kids are around or I'm not in the mood for the "rolling eyes" and "What do you mean you don't know how to do that mom!?" lecture!

In other words when I resort to calling technical support it's because I feel I cannot resolve my issue without assistance.

I'm usually prepared with a very specific question but recognize that the person on the other end is trained to follow a script and we must get through the standard questions first - no matter how many times I call about the same issue!

When I purchased my first car many years ago I had no idea how important it would be to remember the make, model, and colour in order to get past the security questions! I can also anticipate the name, address, phone number and pin code questions before the tech support person requests the information.

With the required preliminaries out-of-the-way I try to remember the reason I called in the first place and pose my question.

It's at this point that my frustration sets in. Quite often the tech support person taking my call is unable to help me. In our complicated, ever-changing world this is understandable.

Unfortunately, perhaps out of fear of appearing incompetent or admitting weakness the person proceeds to offer advice and answers that often do more harm than good and become huge time wasters.

The 3 little words I would love to hear from a tech support person under these circumstances are "I don't know!" If these words are followed by "let me find out" or "let me find someone else with more experience who can help you" I promise to try to refrain from replying with "I love you!"

Talking Toilets - And The Internet Of Things

Where will humanity be able to get a few minutes of peace from the relentless shrill cry of the advertisers and salespeople if everything that a person can possibly own is connected to the internet with a salesperson?"

Yet the Internet of Things could bring a big benefit in the area of service and support, for those devices that may currently be keeping you up at night, in three key ways, says Petrocelli:

• They will make service and support available right from the product. The device (and the company that makes it) helps to initiate the service request and doesn't have to wait for the owner to go looking for some way to contact the service center.

• Embedded service capabilities will gather information critical to the problem and send it directly to the people who can fix the problem. Wouldn't it be great if, when a car gets an engine light, the trouble code plus relevant information could be sent directly to a service center for evaluation without the owner having to bring the car in?

• Service will become more proactive. Who wouldn't want to get a call from a service technician telling you that the funny noise the washing machine is making will soon turn into a major problem that can be averted?

IoT Can Bring Real Business Value

With the Internet of Things, "this is where you add real business value," says Robert Stroud, vice president of innovation and strategy at CA Technologies. "Where an IT person is not just running machines anymore, but fundamentally taking good information and helping the business make true business decisions so that they can adjust the business in real time based on this information. If used well, you'll be able to spot trends and opportunities far faster than you could in the past."

But, just like with social media, privacy will be a critical factor in the evolution of the Internet of Things. According to ISACA's 2013 IT Risk/Reward Barometer report, consumers are concerned about hackers accessing their information (like with the recent department store heist of credit card information). On the other hand, most IT professionals surveyed believe consumers should instead be concerned with the analysts who will be accessing their information and how they will use the data once it is collected.

Big Data Can Bring Big Challenges

Will businesses be ready to reap the rewards of the Internet of Things?

"Businesses tend to be organized into functional teams," says technology expert Brian Proffitt. "Each of these teams has a separate and distinct function: purchasing, logistics, accounts payable, accounts receivable, marketing, sales-useful processes that for the most part don't work together except on a transactional basis.

The influx of data from the Internet of Things (and, really, any big data implementation) can easily disrupt the team-based business model. Information from the Internet of Things will be huge and potentially actionable at an incredibly fast pace. It's just not clear that business is going to be ready to keep up."

The Future of Cloud Computing by 2018

Cloud computing has been a hot topic in the business world, and it is likely to continue to be according to Cisco's latest Global Cloud Index forecast. Cloud data centers, private cloud solutions, software as a service, infrastructure as a service, and platform as a service are all hot, as are projections for consumer cloud storage.

Cisco's forecasts examines cloud computing trends, resulting in a five year forecast. In this case, the forecast covers 2013 through 2018. Among the more notable predictions are:


  • Global data center traffic is expected to triple

  • Annual global data center traffic is expected to reach 8.6 zettabytes by the end of 2018

  • Cloud data centers will process more than 78 percent of workloads with the remaining 22 percent handled by traditional data centers

  • 31 percent of cloud workloads will be in public cloud data centers while the remaining 69 percent will be in private cloud data centers

  • Software as a service workloads will increase from 41 percent in 2013 to 59 percent in 2018

  • Platform as a service workloads will decrease from 15 percent in 2013 to 13 percent in 2018

  • Infrastructure as a service workloads will decrease from 44 percent in 2013 to 28 percent in 2018

  • "Internet of Everything" (IOE) devices will create substantially more data in 2018: 403 zettabytes in 2018 compared to just 113.4 zettabytes in 2013

  • By 2018, more than half of the world's population will use cloud storage for personal storage

Cloud storage was among Cisco's top five trends as a subcategory of "Potential Cloud Catalysts - The Internet of Everything." Growth in this area is due in large part to consumers' embrace of multiple devices such as smartphones and tablets which bring with them a new need for "personal content lockers" where they can store music, photos, videos, and documents created across multiple devices.

While consumer storage needs are on the rise, until recently, cloud storage was rarely talked about as a data and document archiving strategy for business. Dolphin Corporation was one of the first to embrace the cloud for archival purposes with its Content Archive Service for Cloud, a Storage as a Service solution. Like consumers, business users are generating data at an unprecedented rate.

While they don't need personal content lockers per se, business users have different storage needs. For one, they need performance. The data that they need on a regular basis needs to be readily available and delivered quickly. Yet storing massive amounts of data erodes performance, making it hard for systems to quickly respond and serve data as expected. Plus, high performance storage is costly. At the same time, businesses can't simply dispose of old data due to various business, legal, and regulatory requirements.

The answer is to move the less frequently needed data into an archive such as Dolphin's Content Archive Service for Cloud. This provides business users with primary high performance storage for daily use and secondary access to less costly archives should the need arise.

By 2018, cloud computing will have matured, and it's likely that cloud storage and data archiving in the cloud will be more widely used.
